Xiaomi recently launched the Mi 4i at its global launch event in Delhi. The company calls it a flagship, which is priced at Rs 12,999 and will go on sale via Flipkart on April 30. Staying true to Xiaomi’s philosophy, the Mi 4i is an affordable handset with more than decent set of specifications. Let’s take a look at the top five features on the new smartphone.

Display

The Mi 4i flaunts a 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS OGS display with a density of 441ppi. While impressive, it is not just about the numbers. The display boasts something the company likes to call ‘Sunlight Display’. This technology essentially uses dynamic tone mapping to measure the lighting conditions around the smartphone and adjust the display’s colors and brightness. Depending on the conditions, it will either highlight the shadowy areas or tone down highlights, giving the best possible results.

Processing chops

Under the hood, the Mi 4i is powered by a Snapdragon 615 octa-core chipset. This is the second-generation Snapdragon 615 chipset manufactured by Qualcomm India. It includes a combination of four 1.7GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and four 1.1GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and is 64-bit capable.

The chipset is paired with Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of RAM. While it is too early to comment on the smartphone’s performance, Xiaomi has shared some benchmark scores. It claims to boast AnTuTu score of 40,253, Quadrant score of 25,686, and CFBench score of 57,216.

Sefie camera

In addition to the 13-megapixel camera at the back, the Mi 4i has a 5-megapixel snapper up front for selfie lovers. The 5-element camera comes with f/1.8 aperture and 80 degrees wide angle lens. The camera also comes with a gamut of features like countdown mode, and Beautify mode among others. The timer gives you enough time to pose and also lets you know where to look when clicking a selfie. The latter is a feature that guesses the age and gender to apply one of the 36 beauty profiles. It can smoothen skin, brighten eyes, and slim your jaw among others.

Connectivity

Unlike the Mi 4, the Xiaomi Mi 4i does support LTE in India. What’s more, the dual-SIM smartphone has LTE support on both the SIM slots. In India, the smartphone is compatible with both FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800), and TD-LTE Band 40 (2300). Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS.

MIUI 6

The Mi 4i is the first smartphone in Xiaomi’s lineup to run on Android Lollipop. The operating system is wrapped under the company’s MIUI 6. The new UI may not bring a lot of changes, but there are a few new features, including some focused at the Indian audience.

The first feature is the Visual IVR, which would help people save time when they interact with the automated calling system from banks, carriers and other service providers. This feature essentially shows you a visual representation of the IVR menus, so you don’t have to wait for the machine to dictate all the options. The feature will already know all the options and will punch the right numbers and even add pauses when required to get the user to the option they want.

The other feature is support for six Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Unlike other companies that simply acquire language packs, Xiaomi says it works with native speakers of the language in order to get more relevant translation.
