Microsoft has revealed all of the various versions of Windows 10 arriving this summer, with a grand total of seven different Windows 10 packages to choose from. It seems Microsoft’s attempts to simplify the Windows consumer experience have been thrown out once again, in favour of a series of SKUs targeted at specific markets.
First up is the now-standard Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro, and Windows 10 Enterprise editions. These three are functionally identical to their Windows 8.1 counterparts, targeting regular consumer users, power users and small businesses, and large firms respectively. Windows Enterprise will feature a host of management capabilities and will only be available through volume-based licensing agreements.
Next up is Windows 10 Mobile. Doing exactly what it says on the tin, Windows 10 mobile replaces Windows Phone 8.1, and provides a cut-down Windows 10 experience on a range of mobile and tablet devices smaller than 8 inches. There won’t be a full Windows 10 desktop available here, instead it will be an app-focused design with an Android sublayer for running some Android apps.
Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise is a reworked version of Windows 10 Mobile, this time adding a number of business-centric features, including the very latest features and security updates as soon as they become available. This is joined by Windows 10 Education, targeted not just at schools but also students, and it’s likely students will once again be able to nab discounts by buying this version.
Last up is Windows 10 IoT Core (Internet of Things) This is designed for low-end devices not traditionally associated with Windows, including retail points of sale and ATMs.
In terms of those free upgrades Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will be getting, these will correspond to your current version. So if you have Windows 8 Professional, you’ll be entirely to Windows 10 Professional, and so on.
There’s still no release date for Windows 10 to speak of, but summer is bearing down on us so we expect to hear plenty more soon.
