DICE have steadily been revealing fresh new information on the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront since its revealed last month. Star Wars fans have been left with a lot of questions after a showcase which had a little less gameplay than we’d hoped. Over the past few days, design director Niklas Fegraeus and community manager Mathew Everett attempted to answer a few of these questions.
A number of DICE fans were understandably expecting a reskinned Battlefield title, although this is very much not the case. Large-scale destruction has been thrown out in favour of more detailed environments, although trees and other objects will still take damage.
"A part of this philosophy is a desire to recreate this universe in ways never done before in a video game. We have looked at many new technologies that will allow us to truly take a leap into the new generation of video game fidelity, and this has resulted in physically based rendering as well as photogrammetry workflows, " said Fegraeus.
"These are not easy things to do, but the hard work has truly paid off, allowing us to deliver an authentic, immersive experience with Star Wars Battlefront.
Level artist Daniel Cambrand also mentioned how DICE's advanced special effects artists created authentic explosions and particle effects, saying "Our FX people have really captured the feel of the Star Wars explosions and smoke. In terms of Frostbite, we are now using PBR (physically based rendering) which makes the materials appear more accurate. Stone looks like stone, and metal looks like metal, in any environment you put it in.
Niklas also revealed a new game mode, Fighter Squadron. As the name suggests, this is all about huge Starfighter battles set it specially made maps for dogfighting fans. You may have glimpsed a little bit of this in the initial trailer with the X-Wings flying down the canyon. Flying vehicles like Y-Wings and TIE Bombers will be available in a multitude of game modes, and will not require killstreaks to unlock.
It's certainly sounding promising, despite being quite a radical departure from DICE's recent offerings. Only time will tell whether Star Wars Battlefront offers the tactical depth and variety of Battlefield 4, but we're sure to glean a bit more information come E3 2015 in June.
