Battlefield Hardline might be EA’s latest multiplayer shooter darling, but Battlefield 4 is still pulling in the players like few others. So many, in fact, that DICE is working on some hefty updates for its Battlefield 4 Spring Patch, including a rather nifty audio obstruction system for more realistic sounds.
Battlefield 4’s Audio Obstruction System is up on the CTE (Closed Test Environment) now, and this basically means the audio is traced from its source, with materials obstructing it impacting the sound, whether that’s muffling it, or creating an echo. Not only does it sound more realistic, but this can be used to more accurately predict enemy locations and movement.
The finer points of the system can be seen in the video below, which shows the raycasts from the sound sources as either white or red to indicate when the audio instruction system is used - White is unobstructed sound, red is obstructed.
Also coming in Battlefield 4’s Spring Patch, which is expected in late May, is a total rebalancing of weapons. the full weapons balance pass will alter the damage, falloff and suppression of every weapon in the game. The usual PC stability and netcode also get a runthrough, with DICE urging BF4 players to keep overclocking to a minimum to prevent crashes.
This is joined by five brand new weapons, including an assault rifle, carbine, PDW, sidearm, and an LMG. To cap things off these can all be used in the return of the Gun Master game mode from Battlefield 3: Close Quarters. This is like Call of Duty’s Gun Game, playing in a standard Team Deathmatch setup but you switch weapons every two consecutive kills.
Hopefully we could also see some new maps in the near-future, DICE have talked about it but we haven't seen anything concrete yet. The audience is certainly there, more than 135,000 players were gaming at its 24-hour peak today, in comparison to just over 76,000 in Battlefield Hardline.
Despite its rocky launch two years ago, has Battlefield 4 come good? Would you like to see another Premium Pass worth of content to hold you over until Battlefield 5?
