AMD Offers The Witcher 3 HairWorks Performance Fix - Promises New Driver Soon

Nvidia’s Gameworks integration in TheWitcher 3: Wild Hunt has provoked a bit of controversy over the last few weeks. A number of features, such as HairWorks, are optimised for GeForce hardware and run terribly on their AMD counterparts.

AMD has now announced a short-term fix for HairWorks performance in The Witcher 3, as well as revealing its Witcher 3-optimised Catalyst 15.15 drivers should be with us soon. The driver update will also feature performance boosts for AMD gamers playing Project CARS.

The HairWorks fix for The Witcher 3 is very simple indeed, and certainly raises a few questions as to why this wasn’t sorted before launch. To do it, open up the AMD Catalyst Control Center and click Gaming on the menu on the left. In the drop-down list, select 3D Application Settings.

Once here you just need to create a new profile for witcher3.exe. Then, under the Tessellation options change Tessellation Mode to ‘Override Application Settings’. The final step is to then set the Maximum Tessellation Level to your desired level.

This should provide performance roughly on par with Nvidia graphics cards when HairWorks is enabled, offering up 60fps gameplay for those with powerful enough cards. You can check out the impact of HairWorkshere if you’re thinking of enabling it.

Meanwhile the driver update’s better late than never, with AMD issuing a statement on the matter. “AMD is committed to improving performance for the recently-released Project CARS and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. To that end, we are creating AMD Catalyst 15.5 Beta to optimize performance for these titles, and we will continue to work closely with their developers to improve quality and performance. We will release AMD Catalyst 15.5 Beta on our website as soon as it is available.

Keep your eyes on GD for details on when these Catalyst drivers optimised for The Witcher 3 and Project CARS arrive. Have you noticed significant problems with the Nvidia Gameworks features on AMD cards?
