This reawakened a part of my memory I had forgotten even existed, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. creator GSC Game World has announced it’s returning to its roots, creating a sequel in the series that began it all for them - Cossacks 3.
The real-time strategy series made a name for itself for some pretty hardcore tactical nuance, and Cossacks 3 looks to build on this. In development for the past 18 or so months, Cossacks 3 is once more set in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, featuring mammoth-scale battles where troop management and effective city building is key.
You might remember developer GSC Game World ceasing from existence years ago, and you’d be right. Some of the developers went on to work at Vostok Games on Survarium, which is currently in Early Access, and some helped on Metro 2033. Late last year, however, GSC Game World was reopened once more, commencing work on Cossacks 3.
Like its counterpart Total War, Cossacks 3 will feature battlegrounds with thousands of troops at your command, with up to 10,000 units on the map at a time. Unlike Total War, however, Cossacks III has real-time base-building and resource gathering.
This will be a remake of the first Cossacks but with updated graphics, a new story, and original gameplay, according to Evgeniy Grigorovich, producer on Cossacks 3. "We really think that many of the players who were too young in 2001 to play Cossacks literally missed out on it and will be impressed by the gameplay of this classic RTS," he said.
GSC Game World has said there’ll be plenty to be getting on with when it arrives in Q4 this year on Windows PC and Linux, with a total of 12 playable nations and five single-player campaigns to play through. Glad to see GSC Game World back with the classic series? Or would you have preferred a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. sequel? Let us know!
